Greenhouse
2024-10-04: Revamping my current greenhouse with a new canopy and proper windows, with new growing benches, working area and shelves, I am ready for the next season and the future. 3 months of hard work, planning, cleaning, reorganising and building is done.
When one page through the wonderful garden magazines and walk through the magnificent gardens then all the types of greenhouses comes to the fore. Hence my desire and continuous drive to also have these contraptions.
2024-01-05: After much research and investigation, it turns out that no standard greenhouse can fit into the carport cum greenhouse space and give access to the garage. It is therefore necessary to consider a custom solution. During the summer months work will start to replace the current roof, finally fit the door and improve the shelving and workspaces in the greenhouse.
2023-12-30: Planning for the replacement of my current greenhouse is in full swing. Over the late summer, with all the rain we had, the current greenhouse roof just leaked too much and started to cause damage to the plants in the greenhouse. I have been repairing the carport under cover ‘greenhouse’ now since 2007 and it is time to replace the roof and upgrade the under cover area
2021-08-29: More seed sowing: Achillea Millefollium - Colorado Mix Aquilefia: strata, chrystantha (Yellow Queen) Aubrieta hybrida, Hendersonii Coreopsis grandiflora Mayfield giants Dianthus: areanarius f nanus Little maiden; caryopthyllus Chabaud La France
2021-08-01: Spent quite a bit of time to improve the seedtrays and water system. I big learn from last year that watering from the top is a complete no no. I increased the depth of the seedtray material with a mixture of soil, matting and also added some schedded paper. The tray irrigation was updated to allow for more rapid flow. Previously I used soaking pipes. however, watering is to slow, resulting in my not being able to monitor the wetting process. This time round I added multiple small side pipes to distribute the water and berried the pipes under the surface.

2021-06-07: Coming out of the 2021 planting season, the one thing that stands out for me (from a frustration point of view), is that the labels I used last year did not last. a) some of the ink faded. b) when transplanting, the individual plants are not labelled and that means I cannot identify the plants. I also lost track of the planting conditions of the plants so I landed up with plants in the wrong places.

2019-07-18: starting to turn the car port at the back of the garden into a working greenhouse to grow seed and protect some plants from the harsh winter cold.
2018-09-05: Following paging through a garden magazine on holiday I decided to make a real effort of converting the car port at the back of the garden into a greenhouse of some sort
2005-2012: This was a quiet time from a greenhouse perspective. We moved, and I had to leave my wonderful greenhouse behind. I stuffed the greenhouse and garden gear in shelves under the carport at the new house.
2003-12-14: Growing plants for the garden in the greenhouse in december with the winter protection in place.

2003-05-20: The children, including Marcus helped with digging out the foundations. I then built the based wall and erected the greenhouse by myself.
2002-08-09: Started with propagation for next season: some pelargonium cuttings; some michaelmas daisy cuttings; planted stock seed; as well as some alstroemeria seed that I bought at the Hampton court Show. From now on propogation will rapidly increase.
2002-05-13: This weekend I completed the building of the largest and most elaborate greenhouse of all the plant cultivation units that I built in the past 4 years. It is a lean to construction on the back of the garage. It does not get any sun, but hopefully will get enough light. I installed large mirrors, and painted the inside white to increase the light reflection, not sure that it would work - but it was great fun and hard work. I also installed another light in my tool room to allow me to work there at night. I think I have now completed all the plant propogation and care taking buildings, and should be in a position to work there, and prepare my plants with much more success. Not yet sure if I will succeed to keep the units above freezing in winter, although I am quite successful with the glass house to keep that above freezing with the small ventelator that I have.
2002-03-29: I have completed the shed with the help of the Johan and Gawie - it was a BIG job, but now that it is up it is really worthwhile as I can put all the large tools, garden chairs, some materials, the bicycles and other stuff in the shed. I am very pleased with the outcome.

2001-02-05: Having a helper to organise makes a lot of sense
2001-01-05: During the past couple of days I cleaned out the Garden shed, put new shelves in, laid a path to the Greenhouse and washed all the pots with Jeys Fluid. All this really created a good and pleasant workplace for the garden
1999-11-20: From very early on gardening in the UK emphasised the need to have some form of protection for seedlings and getting some plants through the winter. I discovered a delapidated greenhouse in the garden and then built my first cold frame from the windows out of the building works.
