They are mainly summer-flowering bulbs, which produce a branched leafy stem. They have lance-shaped or linear leaves, which grow up to 22cms long, and are scattered or in whorls. The flowers are usually trumpet to bowl shaped and fragrant. The plants have a spread of up to 30cm. They are usually frost hardy, and will need full sun and any well drained soil. You can propagate by seeds in the autumn or spring.

Alternatively sow seeds in pots in a cold frame in August. Seedlings of most species do not flower until they are at least 2 to 5 years old. Lilies can also be propagated from bulb scales. To do this, lift the bulbs when dormant and remove some scales from the side of the bulb. Pot up in a peat substitute and sand mix and grow on in a cold frame
