lily of the valey
Genus of 3 species.
Rhizomatous perennial found in light woodland, scrub or alpine meadows. Ovate-lance-shaped to elliptic, stalked, basal leaves. Pendent, bell-shaped, fragrant, mostly white flowers are produced on arching racemes.
Grow in wild or woodland garden, or use for ground cover in a damp, shady border. Prefer leafy, fertile, humus-rich, moist soil. Top-dress with leaf mould in autumn.
For fragrant indoor display, lift and pot up rhizomes in autumn, and force gently or allow them to grow at their own pace. Replant outdoors after flowering.
For proparation, separate rhizomes in autumn, keeping moist until established.
Fully hardy.
