hosta
The funkia or hosta is also known as a plantain lily. They are not native to the UK. There are many varieties of which I managed to plant the following:
August Moon
Silver crown
fortunei albopicta
blue bush
dream queen
montana
gold standard
undulata (white center)
regal spendor
longissima
big daddy
Paul Revere
Each variety has different characteristics:
August Moon is a medium-large, yellow-leaved hosta that grows in a dense mound to 16-20” tall and to 36-42” wide. Searsuckered, wide-oval leaves (to 9” long and 8” wide) with strong veins and cuspidate tips open chartreuse-green but mature to gold (particularly with significant sun exposure). Leaves are heart-shaped (often with pinched lobes). Bell-shaped, light lavender to white, flowers bloom in mid-summer on grayish-yellow scapes rising to 32” tall. This cultivar is more tolerant of sun than most hostas
Hosta silver crown is small to medium size plant, with a white margin and pale purple flowers.
fortunei albopicta is a vigorous, herbaceous perennial, forming a clump of broadly-ovate, boldly-veined green leaves, to 20cm long and 15cm wide. Pale purple flowers on erect stems, to 75cm tall, appear in summer
big daddy, bought in plant 2003. ‘Big Daddy’ is a clump-forming perennial growing to about a metre tall and across. The large leaves, with 25cm long blades, are glaucous blue turning green and deeply-puckered; the greyish-white, bell-shaped flowers are borne in early summer
Paul Revere has blue green leaves, puckered in texture and very large with an almost round shape with white flowers

Propagation Notes
Plant Type: Perennial
Propagation: Division
Hardiness: Semi Hardy H6 (-10)
Flowering Season: Mid summer
Pruning Remove spent foliage as required and clear up dead foliage when it dies back at the end of the growing season
Pests Plants in pots may be susceptible to vine weevil. The Big Daddy cultivar is said to be resistant to slugs No hosta variety is completely slug and snail free, but those with thicker and tougher leaves are more appealing.
Diseases May be subject to a virus

2024-07-04: This year the slugs and snails where particularly bad. Catching them is the only way out.
2023-08-18; Starting to make peace than I will have to share some of my hostas with the slugs and snails.
2004-05-06: Experimenting with different ways to keep slugs at bay. Planting in pots, versus directly in the garden, adding grit around the base, using snail bait - all make some difference but it is hard to get any damage free Plants
2001-03-15: The hostas has such a wonderful display.
