This genus consists of 125 species of deciduous and evergreen trees and shrubs. The leaves are usually oval with smooth edges. The flowers are generally large, fragrant and solitary, and they will bloom in white, yellow, pink or purple, and may bloom in various shapes. The fruits are cone-like or roughly cylindrical. They are fully to frost hardy and will need sun or semi-shade and shelter from strong winds. They grow well in fertile, well drained soil. Propagation is by semi-ripe cuttings in the summer or by seed, when ripe in the autumn.
